Sleep. How it works?
It was widely believed that sleep was an inactive and dormant state where the body went into a passive mode. Research, however, has revealed that this is quite far from true. Sleep is a very active and dynamic phase where the brain activity level is high. We might not be overtly active but there’s a lot going on under the surface.
Sleep has distinctive stages that come in cycles throughout the night. The brain stays active throughout sleep, but different things happen during each stage. These stages are REM and NREM. These occur in cycles and one can have up to 5 cycles in a night.
Lack of sufficient sleep can be harmful—for example, you are more likely to hurt yourself using power tools when you are drowsy.
The sleep mechanism is controlled by the increase and decrease of ‘sleep’ and ‘awake’ chemicals. Sleep chemicals comprise amino acids like GABA or Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid. This is the most important sleep chemical that slows down brain activity and causes us to relax and ultimately, sleep. The ‘awake’ chemicals include adrenaline and noradrenaline. These are our natural ‘upper’s.
When the body is unable to raise GABA levels and lower adrenaline and noradrenaline, sleep is affected.
Sleep needs vary from person to person, and they change throughout one’s lifecycle. Most adults need 7–8 hours of sleep each night. Newborns, on the other hand, sleep between 16 and 18 hours a day, and children in preschool sleep between 10 and 12 hours a day. School–aged children and teens need at least 9 hours of sleep a night. Some people believe that adults need less sleep as they get older. But there is no evidence to show that older people can get by with less sleep than younger people. As people age, however, they often get less sleep or they tend to spend less time in the deep, restful stages of sleep. Older people are also more easily awakened.
